UNLEASHED - LIFE DRAWING JOURNEY

Unleashed is an experimental journey through life drawing, breaking down and rebuilding our pre-established rules.  I collborated with artist Crista Siglin to create a two day workshop for 90Mil’s Art School Programme.

Unleashed was created as a big middle finger to traditional life drawing practices, which in many ways can continue to feed into the inclusivity of art education in ways which we did not appreciate. We considered how to create an environment where the model was equal with the participants, where we could celebrate a person and identity through life drawing which is often not considered. As many life drawing practices will continue to only use white, able bodied, cisgender and thin individuals. Our model Lisa Walter describes themselves as a ‘fativist’, their existence challenges societal norms and acceptance.

The project was also developed as a means to challenge our personal relationships to drawing, and how we can deconstruct rules we’ve learnt, through play and collaboration.

We split the day into two parts, day one focuses on scale, collage and animation through life drawing. While day two looked at how music, light and projection can influence our drawings. Over the two days, we facilitated intentional conversations about our relationships to drawing and how people felt after certain exercises. We really wanted to create a lively, loud environment, which is something many life drawing spaces also will not have.

UNLEASHED will be continued again in 2025.
